Florida: Glen Edward Rogers executed – he was known as a possible serial killer
On Thursday evening, 62-year-old Glen Edward Rogers was executed by lethal injection in the US state of Florida. He was sentenced to death in Florida for the murder of a 34-year-old mother of two in 1995.
Rogers was also sentenced to death for the killing of a woman in California and was linked to several other murders without being charged. He once told the police that he had killed around 70 people, but this could not be substantiated and he later recanted. However, some of his alleged and proven female victims had similar characteristics: They were in their 30s, petite and had red hair.
In his final words, Rogers thanked his wife, who had visited him in prison earlier in the day, according to visitor logs. He continued, “I know you have many questions you need answers to. I promise you that those questions will be answered in the near future, and I hope you can find some closure with that. President Trump, keep up the good work to make America great. I’m ready to go.”
In a statement released immediately after the execution, the organization Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (FADP) points out that Glen Rogers was beaten and sold for sex long before he ever committed a crime, repeatedly raped by adult women and forced to pose for sexually explicit photos by a child molester – all before he was even a teenager, between the ages of 10 and 12.
FADP questions how a state can recognize the serious effects of child abuse in its criminal laws, but in the same breath ignore it in an offender and not accept it as a mitigating circumstance.
It was the fifth execution in Florida this year and there is no end in sight for the time being. According to experts, Glen Rogers was already strapped to the gurney in the execution room two hours before the execution – in line with the current protocol of the Florida Department of Corrections.
