Florida: Gulf War veteran Jeffrey Hutchinson executed – despite massive mental disorder
On Thursday evening, 62-year-old Jeffrey Hutchinson was executed by lethal injection by the US state of Florida. The death sentence was carried out around two hours late because five final appeals were pending before the United States Supreme Court, all of which were ultimately rejected.
Hutchinson was sentenced to death because he had been found guilty of shooting his 32-year-old girlfriend and her three children, aged 9, 7 and 4, following an argument in 1998.
The case caused a stir because Jeffrey Hutchinson was a Gulf War veteran. He suffered from memory problems, panicked hallucinations, vomiting blood, paranoid delusions and severe mood swings – all signs of the so-called “Gulf War illness”.
His symptoms were downplayed and ignored and he received no treatment for his war-related mental disorders and trauma, explains the organization “Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty” in its statement.
After the crime, Hutchinson called 911 and said, “I just shot my family.” He was found at the scene with the gun, the phone receiver still in his hand with 911 on the line.
He later claimed that two strangers had committed the murders and that he had been charged with revealing government secrets – the paranoia apparently continued.
Around 130 war veterans wrote to Governor DeSantis in the run-up to the execution and demanded that he refrain from executing Hutchinson under the given circumstances – to no avail.
