Florida: Michael Bell executed – although six prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony
On Tuesday evening, 54-year-old Michael Bernard Bell was executed by lethal injection in the US state of Florida. He was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman with a machine gun in a rampage in December 1993. It was allegedly an act of revenge for the killing of his brother, Lamar Bell, who had been killed by the half-brother of his male victim.
Lawyers and supporters of Michael Bell pointed out in vain that there was no physical evidence linking their client to the crime. At least six witnesses who had testified against Bell in the original trial later recanted their statements and declared that they had been coerced into giving false testimony.
Furthermore, it remains to be established that Michael Bell was taken to the notorious Dozier reform school facility at the age of 15 after a car theft, where he was subjected to massive abuse. In addition to sexual abuse and beatings by staff at the institution, the teenagers were forced into violent fights while staff placed bets on the outcome of the fights. Over 30 graduates of the Dozier School for Boys, which closed in 2011, ended up on Florida’s death row.
In his final words, Bell simply stated, “Thank you for not letting me spend the rest of my life in prison.” The male victim’s family, namely a brother and his son, spoke out against the execution, as the organization Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty mentioned in a statement:
“When the people most affected by this crime don’t want more murders in their name, it speaks volumes. And it underscores the unavoidable truth that the death penalty in Florida is merely an instrument of power and politics.”
It was the eighth execution in Florida this year – the next one is scheduled for July 31. Expert Robert Dunham of the Death Penalty Policy Project, former director of the Death Penalty Information Center, explains that almost all of this year’s executions have been carried out in US states where slavery was once common, and most of the cases have involved victims of white skin color.
