Ivan Cantu executed in Texas – despite massive doubts about his guilt

On Wednesday evening, 50-year-old Ivan Cantu was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville in the US state of Texas.

He was sentenced to death for the murder of his cousin and his cousin’s fiancée in 2001, but always maintained his innocence while still on the execution couch.

In fact, Cantu had a poor defense attorney at trial who called no witnesses, presented no evidence and commissioned no expert testimony. Things didn’t get any better in the appeals and his current counsel waived the usual final motions to the United States Supreme Court.

In turn, the prosecution withheld evidence from the defense for over a decade and the star prosecution witness was proven to have perjured himself.

A podcast series of over 40 episodes has explored the Ivan Cantu case in detail and concludes that there is massive doubt about Cantu’s guilt.

However, no argument was able to prevent the death sentence from being carried out, nor were over 150,000 signatures and the advocacy of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Martin Sheen.

At his request, Ivan Cantu’s spiritual advisor was the famous anti-death penalty activist Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book “Dead Man Walking”, the film adaptation of which starred Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn and attracted no less attention.
