Florida: Daniel Conahan Executed—Despite Extremely Weak Evidence and Rejected DNA Tests
On Thursday evening, 72-year-old Daniel Conahan was executed by lethal injection in the U.S. state of Florida. He had been sentenced to death for the alleged murder of a 21-year-old man. The naked and mutilated body was found on April 17, 1996, in a remote wooded area on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The victim’s genitals had been severed.
Although Conahan stood trial only for this one murder, investigators believe he was responsible for additional murders because numerous other human remains were found in the area. As a result, the perpetrator became known as the “Hog Trail Killer,” and Conahan was referred to in the media as a serial killer.
However, he has consistently denied killing the 21-year-old or anyone else. In recent weeks, his lawyers had fought to delay the execution, arguing that Conahan had been convicted largely on circumstantial evidence and that further DNA testing could prove his innocence. However, the request for DNA testing was denied.
The organization “Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty” (FADP) states in its statement on the Daniel Conahan case: “Danny was never charged with any of these other murders, let alone brought to trial. He was convicted of a single murder. Even the evidence in this case was alarmingly thin.
Danny was sent to death row based on circumstantial evidence and salacious assumptions about gay men and their sexual behavior at a time when gay people were heavily stigmatized. The police only began to regard him as a suspect after they reexamined an allegation they had dismissed as unreliable two years earlier:
Stanley Burden had claimed that Danny had assaulted him during a sexual encounter. Burden, who was already incarcerated in Ohio at the time, later admitted that he had been promised assistance with his parole in exchange for his testimony.
Danny’s fate was ultimately sealed by prison informant John Neuman, who claimed that Danny had confessed to the murder. This statement has since been seriously questioned by another cellmate, who confirmed that Danny had never confessed and that Neuman was known in prison for fabricating confessions.”
