Florida: William Frances Silvia Jr. Executed — The Execution Marathon Shows No Signs of Ending

On Tuesday evening, 61-year-old William Frances Silvia Jr. was executed by lethal injection by the state of Florida. He had been sentenced to death after shooting his 39-year-old ex-wife in September 2006 because he could not accept their separation. His ex-mother-in-law survived with serious injuries.

In a written “last statement” prepared in advance, which his spiritual advisor, Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood, read aloud during an online press conference three hours before the execution, Silvia expressed how deeply he regretted his crime, which he had carried with him every day. He said he had dedicated the rest of his life to preventing people from harming others. Silvia addressed a message to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, urging him not only to sign execution orders but also to witness the executions in person.

In its statement, the organization “Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty” (FADP) pointed out that William Silvia Jr. himself had grown up in a home marked by domestic violence and had suffered from various mental health issues: “As a child, he witnessed such incidents in his parents’ home and suffered physical and emotional abuse himself. Prior to the crime, he had a documented history of delusions, paranoia, alcohol dependence, and multiple head injuries.

In the months leading up to the murder of his ex-wife, he lost his job, became homeless, and experienced a severe deterioration in his mental health. Both the experts for the prosecution and the defense agreed that his chronic mental disorder was a genuine mitigating factor. The jury concurred with this assessment but nevertheless sentenced him to death by a non-unanimous vote.”
